Canine Joint Health Soft Chews

These soft chews can be safely used in dogs of all ages and stages. The flavoring used to make the chews palatable is a hydrolyzed soy protein that tastes like roast beef and liver, so dogs will readily eat the chew. Since the soy protein is hydrolyzed, this product is safe to use with dogs that may food allergies. The chews can begin to be used in puppies as long as the puppy is on solid food.

Chondroitin sulfate is a component of the viscous fluid found in all joint capsules. Pala-Tech uses methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) as an alternative to chondroitin sulfate. Since MSM is a small molecule, it is readily and rapidly absorbed and transported to the joint capsule. If the dog needs chondroitin sulfate, the MSM will provide the joint with the sulfur building blocks so the dog can make its own chondroitin sulfate, if that is what the joint needs. If the joint is not deficient in chondroitin sulfate, then the dog can use the MSM to make other sulfur containing beneficial nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins and immunoglobulins. This way, the MSM is not wasted and provides broader benefits to the dog. On the other hand, the ingredient chondroitin sulfate is a relatively large molecule and the absorption from the dog’s stomach and the transport of this compound to the joint capsule is questionable. Also, if the joint is not deficient in chondroitin sulfate, what happens to this ingredient…it is not used by the dog and is therefore wasted. Therefore, Pala-Tech uses MSM instead of chondroitin sulfate, since it has broader clinical benefits and will be a more beneficial ingredient for the dog.

When a pet owner initially begins using a joint health supplement, it is important to use this supplement for a long enough time period to see if the product is providing benefits to the dog. For joint health supplements, the recommendation is to use the product for at least 4-6 weeks before deciding if the product is beneficial. With the 120-count package size, this provides at least 90 days (12 weeks) of use for even a long size dog (60-100 lbs).
